└───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
· IceNote enters EMOTION where others say "Mister X Says :" IceNote puts in
"Mister X Hostily Barfs or Mister X Annoyingly Whines" it has
750+ different combinations.
· Also, IceNote has a feature where the user can create their own expression
words rather than having IceNote randomly generate them. This option is
Sysop configurable.
· IceNote keeps a log of all users that run the program at the time and date
at which they run it. Also it keeps track of the alias they choose to use.
· IceNote has easy to configure colours for Lines, Header, Header Background,
and User Message.
· IceNote will self-exit after 5 minutes of inactivity, in order to prevent
the user from wasting online time if they have forgotten that they were
on your BBS.
· All messages that are written in IceNote are stored in an encrypted file,
and can be viewed using the Sysop Utility program NoteCFG.EXE.
This program will tell the user's name who wrote the message, their alias,
the time and date the message was written, and the message itself.
· Options for SysOp to add NON-ABORT codes to the bulletin, as well as a
reading pause.
· Easy Set Up! Not Like a lot of programs sysops have to deal with.

│░░░▒▒▒▓▓▓ Registration ▓▓▓▒▒▒░░░│
└───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
The Development of IceNote v0.70 took many long hours, and a lot of time
and effort not to mention money. This program is not FreeWare. If this
program satisfies your expectations of a online comment door,if not MORE,
then you are expected to register it after an evaluation period of 30 days
or sooner. By doing this you can be sure of continued development of the
software. Thanks for your support.
This Program may be freely distributed but DO NOT under any circumstances
change any of the executables or alter any files that come in the original
distribution archive.
I urge you to register as soon as you can! The more registrations that
I have will show the interest of people in the program, and I will release
a newer version with many more features. If you register, the Message
Censoring & tagline features will become available. All "Unregistered"
messages and almost inaudible beeps within the program will also be removed.
Please note that the status of features (whether they are available or not
to unregistered users) may be changed without further warning in later
versions of the software; but this does not mean that they will be
changed.
If you wish to register, please fill out the registration form :
North America
-------------
Register. Can - Registration Form For Canadian Users
Register.Usa - For the U.S.A, and for all other Registrations
Europe
------
Register.Ger - Registration Form For Germany
Register.Uk - Registration Form For UK/Eire
Please note: The AUSTRALIAN and NETHERLANDS registration sites are NOT
available, so please do not forward your registration funds
to either of these sites (if you have an older registration
form). Both sites are continuing as support sites, but not
registration sites.
Please at this time send ALL registrations to the address listed in the
correct registration form. Thank you for your support.
Any Registration forms that have invalid or missing information may be
considered void and not be processed, depending on the extent of the
errors.
Due to recent events, I have changed my policy on personal cheques that
are sent in to pay for registration. I will continue to honour them,
however as of this release, there will be a 3 week hold placed on the
cheque to ENSURE that it does NOT go N.S.F. Although most people are
honest about this, lately too many people have sent in N.S.F. cheques, and
when contacted about them, show little or no concern about them or the
financial difficulties they may have caused.
Additionally, a service charge of $15 will be levied against any N.S.F.
cheques. Until both the full payment, and the service charge is recieved
in the form of a MONEY ORDER, the registration (and any future
registrations) will not be processed.
In conclusion to the above information, to ensure a speedy turnaround time
it is recommended you send your registration in the form of a money order
(or direct deposit for Canadian residents) If you do choose to send in a
personal cheque, it means that you have read and understood these
conditions.

│░░░▒▒▒▓▓▓ Program Information ▓▓▓▒▒▒░░░│
└───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
IceNote was written/coded by Jeremy Landvoigt of Ice Technologies BBS at
FidoNET 1:259/912. The original code for IceNote was developed over 3
years ago, and the program was known as NTAU (Note To All Users). It was a
program that users could use to post there own news bulletins or whatever
they felt like saying.. whether ads for a new BBS, a challenge to other
users to dare to conquer a particular online game, sometimes a flame or two
to particular people. It didnt have nearly as many features as this new
software has. It was actually kind of ugly :). It didnt do very well as a
result. NTAU was one of the very first online programs that I ever
developed, and it really wasnt meant to be released in the first place.
However, now that I have written IceChat and IceEdit, I decided to yank
a couple of my older programs off of the dusty shelf and totally re-create
them. The result was IceNote, a brand new, Message to next caller type of
door loaded with some very unique features. I hope you guys like it. I know
it was one of the least stressful and fun programs I have ever written, And
I am sure you will agree it will be sure to provide a lot of people with a
chuckle due to its interesting features.

└───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
Setting up IceNote is quite easy. This section of the documentation will
attempt to take you step by step on how to use the configuration utility
NoteCfg.Exe to set up IceNote. Most of the options are self explanatory.

· Save & Exit: Save your current configuration and exit the program.
· Save Without Exit: Save your current settings and continue configuring
the program.
· Exit Without Save: Exit the program, but do not save anything. This is
useful for if you really mess up your configuration somehow.
· Registration Info: This will give you a screen displaying your
registration status of IceNote. If you are unregistered, you are expected
to register within 30 days.
· Program Info: This will display the current program information such as
version, release date, major changes to the software.
· This is the locked user editor. This feature is very useful for SysOps who
have "problem" users. If you are in a situation where are user is abusing
IceNote, simply enter his/her name in one of the fields in this editor.
If the user attempts to execute IceNote, it will not allow them to enter
a comment. Supports up to 23 locked users.
· Database Reader: This option will allow you to read notes that have been
previously written and saved. All messages that are ever written in
IceNote are saved to the datafile. It will allow you to see who wrote the
message, what their alias was that they chose, the message text etc.

Bulletins File: IceNote will generate both an ANSi and and ASCii file
containing the user message text. In this field you can specify the full
path and filename of the bulletins file. Do NOT specify the file extension!
IceNote will automatically create two files with the specified filename and
the extensions .ANS and .ASC.
Database File: This is the file that IceNote creates that all message text
is stored in. Specify the filename ONLY! Do not specify the path, as IceNote
will try to use the INOTE environment variable to find the file.

· Pick Alias: Should IceNote allow the user to create their own alias to be
used in place of their real name?
· Get RA Alias: This feature can only be used with RA/PB. If IceNote
can find a valid Ra 2.0x exitinfo.bbs file in the current directory, it
will read in the user's BBS alias, and will allow them to use it if they
wish.
· Defined emotion: Should IceNote allow the user to pick their own emotion
words?
· Pipe Codes: Should IceNote allow the user to enter pipe codes in order to
change the colour of the message text? Selecting no will filter out all
pipe codes. Selecting yes will convert the pipe codes to ANSi escape
sequences.
· Note Censoring: This is a registered only feature. Enabling this will
cause IceNote to censor the entire message text. All words that are
considered inappropriate must be in a textfile called CENSOR.CFG. Place
one inappropriate word per line.
· Random Expressions: Should IceNote generate random expressions? If not,
IceNote will put "Jeremy Landvoigt says:" rather than putting something
like "Jeremy Landvoigt happily sings:" for example. IceNote has about
750 different combinations of expressions that it can come up with.
· Allow Disconnect: Should IceNote allow a menu option to logoff the BBS
from within the program?
· Check Alias: Should IceNote check the user defined alias against the Sysop
name and also any inappropriate alias' in the ALIAS.CFG file? If YES, and
IceNote determines that the user has chosen an unacceptable alias, their
REAL name will be used instead.
· Allow CTRL Codes: Should IceNote allow users to make use of Control codes?
Reminder, Control codes are used by remote access to perform certain
functions such as displaying user information. NOTE: IceNote will
NOT allow CTRL-X, or CTRL-KX combination no matter what this toggle is
set at, because they are both too hazardous, as one will cause RA
to load an external door (such as FORMAT C: ) and the other will
cause RemoteAccess to drop carrier.
· Use "ENTER" Prompt: Should IceNote append a "Press ENTER To Continue:"
prompt onto the ANSi/ASCii files that it will generate? This is handy to
disable for BBS's that have a built in Hardcoded prompt that is
automatically displayed when a "CR Prompt" code is encountered in a
textfile.
· Bulletin Mode: IceNote has two (2) different available bulletin modes.
IceNote can have single bulletins - when a new bulletin is entered, the
old one is deleted resulting in only one bulletin at a time. Multiple
bulletins - when a new bulletin is entered, it is APPENDED to the previous
one. When the file is displayed, it will show the first bulletin, and then
the second etc.. etc...

· CR String: This will allow you to define the code/string that the BBS will
interpret as a "WAIT FOR CARRIAGE RETURN". It defaults to CTRL-A (The
little happy face) because that is the code that is used in RemoteAccess
to cause RA to wait for a carriage return when displaying a screen.
· No Abort String: This is the string that the SysOp can optionally have
IceNote include at the beginning of the bulletin, so that the users can't
abort viewing of the bulletin. In RemoteAccess this code is ^B.
· Delay String: This is the string that IceNote will use if the SysOp wishes
to have a reading pause included at the end of the bulletin. In
RemoteAccess this code is ^W.
· You can select the type of border you want IceNote to use. It can be either
double line "═══" or single line "───".
· Header Text: This is a registered only feature. This will allow you to put
a configurable string in the header of the ANSi bulletins. For example,
the default header is:
" IceNote v0.70 [Reg'd] CopyRight 1994-96 Jeremy Landvoigt "
Say if you were to put your BBSname in this field, it would result in the
header looking like this:
" IceNote v0.70 Ice Technologies BBS "
This way you can personalize the header a little bit more to your own BBS.
· SysOp Security: Users with this security or higher will not be security
checked for inappropriates alias' or text. Also, IceNote will allow the
use of all control codes, except CTRL-X and CTRL-KX. It is VERY important
that this feature is properly configured!
· Max Msg Length: What is the maximum number of lines that the total message
can be? (This number may range from 1-15). Use a smaller number if you
have IceNote in Graffiti mode, such as 3. For regular users, 10 is
suggested. If IceNote is specifically for SysOp bulletins, you may want
15.
· Strike Symbol: This is the character that IceNote will use to strike out
unwanted text from the bulletin.

│░░░▒▒▒▓▓▓ Setting Up IceNote.Exe With RemoteAccess ▓▓▓▒▒▒░░░│
└───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
Please read the section of this document entitled 'Program Information -
Using NoteCfg' BEFORE attempting to install IceNote into RA. Failure to
setup IceNote correctly before installing it into your bbs program will
probably result in IceNote failing to run or not running as expected.
In order to run IceNote.Exe with a user ONLINE, you must have a fossil
driver active. A fossil driver such as BNU should work fine with IceNote.
If you don't have a fossil driver installed, a simple error message will
be displayed, and the program will stop. A fossil is NOT required when
running locally.
**Note** : Do _NOT_ write protect _ANY_ Of the IceNote files, if you do,
IceNote will ignore them, and therefore not run properly.
We will now run through EVERYTHING you need to do in order to get IceNote
to run in your RemoteAccess setup.
1. Extract all the files in the distribution archive to a directory of your
choice. C:\RA\NOTE is recommended and is assumed to be the directory you
are using from now on.
2. To help IceNote find it's configuration files (if it is not being run
from the current directory), you need to define an environment variable
for it in this manner in your AutoExec.Bat :
SET INOTE={PATH TO ICENOTE DIRECTORY}
PLEASE NOTE, THE ENVIRONMENT VARIABLE NAME IS INOTE - NOT ICENOTE !!
The environment variable is used by IceNote to find its system files
and configuration. Failure to setup the environment variable can result
in IceNote failing to run correctly - YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!
Please see your DOS manual for more information on environment variables.
N.B.
You will need to reboot your machine after entering the environment
variable for it to take effect.
3. Run NoteCfg.Exe and configure all of IceNote's options as explained
earlier in this document. You MUST configure IceNote for it to work
correctly! Refer to the section of this document for setting up IceNote.
4. You will need to set up IceNote to run from a Type 7 shell. You can run
it either from a batchfile (recommended) or directly. If you run it
directly, your commandline should be like this:
C:\RA\NOTE\ICENOTE.EXE -D:C:\BBS\RA
The -D: parameter will IceNote where to find the dropfiles (dorinfo1.def
and Exitinfo.BBS). Also, remember that if you are running it directly
that you MUST have your INOTE environment variable set!
If you run it from a batchfile, the file should look similar to this:
CD \RA\NOTE
COPY \RA\DORINFO1.DEF
COPY \RA\EXITINFO.BBS
ICENOTE.EXE
DEL DORINFO1.DEF
DEL EXITINFO.BBS
5. When you run IceNote, be sure that the IceNote.Cfg file has been created.
If it has not, then you MUST run NoteCfg.Exe. If you don't, and attempt
to run IceNote.Exe directly, IceNote will display an error message that
IceNote.Cfg doesn't exist.
┌───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│░░░▒▒▒▓▓▓ Files That Are Used By IceNote ▓▓▓▒▒▒░░░│
└───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
IceNote will call upon a number of files during runtime. They are listed
below along with a brief description.
ALIAS.CFG - This is a textfile containing inappropriate words that
may not be used as an alias. The Format is simple. One
bad word per line. If you do not want users impersonating
the SysOp, it is recommended you put your name in here too.
CENSOR.CFG - This is a textfile containing inappropriate words that
IceNote will strike out of the message text when they are
encountered. {+}
DORINFO1.DEF - This is the dropfile that most BBS packages can create that
holds important user profile information.
ICENOTE.CFG - This is IceNote's configuration file. It is absolutely
necessary in order for IceNote.Exe to function.
NONOTE.CFG - This is the locked user datafile, explained earlier on in
this documentation.
ICENOTE.LOG - This is the logfile that IceNote will create. It will list
what users have entered the door, and whether they posted
a note. It will also record any alias that might be chosen.
ICENOTE.DAT - This is the datafile created by IceNote that will keep
track of user messages.
[PATH]\????.ANS - This is the note ANSi screen that will be created.
[PATH]\????.ASC - This is the note ASCii screen that will be created.
┌───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│░░░▒▒▒▓▓▓ Archive Contents ▓▓▓▒▒▒░░░│
└───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
IceNote should be in a ZIP compression format, and include the following
files :
iCENOTE.EXE - The Main Program
iCENOTE.DOC - Program Documentation
NOTECFG.EXE - Use to configure the program, and also a Sysop Utility
to read the current message and find out who it was
written by, what alias they used, and what the date
and time was when it was written.
REGiSTER.CAN - Canadian Registration Form
REGiSTER.USA - Generic Registration form for USA, all other
countries
REGiSTER.GER - Germany/European Registration Form
REGiSTER.UK - United Kingdom Registration Form
FiLE_iD.DiZ - General Program Description
If one or any combination of these files are missing, or files have been
ADDED, then you are using a possibly modified or altered copy of IceNote.
It would be advised that you delete this copy, and get a clean copy of
IceNote from either of the BBS's listed at the end of the documentation.
┌────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│░░░▒▒▒▓▓▓ Other Ice Technologies Utilities ▓▓▓▒▒▒░░░│
└────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
Here is a list of all the Ice Technologies utilities that were available at
the time of release of this archive. If you enjoy using this IceSoft utility,
you may want to check some of these out! :)
· IceChat -
IceChat is a split screen chat utility for RemoteAccess BBS packages.
It can be used with many other BBS types as long as they support
Dorinfo1.Def/Door.Sys type Doors.
· IceEdit -
IceEdit is a fullscreen ANSi message editor that was originally designed
for use with RemoteAccess. Although it has only been tested with
RemoteAccess v2.0x, and TeleGard v2.7 it should be compatible with any
other BBS that uses the QuickBBS style dropfiles that contain the
message writing information. These files are MSGTMP & MSGINF. You should
check your BBS documentation to see if your software supports this
system. IceEdit also calls on the Dorinfo1.Def file to read in necessary
information about the user profile.
· IceNote -
IceNote was the third Ice Technologies door to become available. It is a
message to all users type door with many neat features. It has been tested
with both RemoteAccess v2.0x, and the latest release of Renegade, and
should work with any other Dorinfo1.Def compatible BBS Packages.
· IceBank -
IceBank was the fourth Ice Technologies utility available. It is a fully
functional, fully configurable timebank system for RemoteAccess v2.0x.
It has many cool features, including InterBBS transactions.
· IceUser -
This is the fifth Ice Technologies utility to become available. It is a
fully functional online user editor for RemoteAccess v2.0x. Very secure.
· IceCBV -
The very newest Ice Technologies door available! Took awhile to finally
get it released, but you won't be disappointed. Full featured callback
verification system for RemoteAccess and ProBoard. Many unique features!
Look forward to even more features in the next version!
